Ants are small hymenopteran insects that represent one of the most successful groups of insects in the animal kingdom. They live in large colonies that can consist of hundreds of thousands or even millions of individuals, and their nests function as perfectly organized communities. That is why natural scientists classify them as social insects.

Ants are highly intelligent and can be found almost everywhere on Earth. While more than 100 different species live in the wild nature of Central Europe, in Czech households you will most commonly encounter the common ant, the house ant, and the notorious Pharaoh ant.

Common ant
The most widespread species in our region is the common ant. It has a brown to gray-black color, but unlike other ants, it does not have a shiny body. Workers usually reach a length of 2–5 millimeters, and their antennae, abdomen, and legs are covered with fine hairs. Since the common ant tolerates both dry and humid environments well, you can encounter it almost anywhere—from mountainous areas to lowlands, as well as in homes and gardens.
House ant
Another widespread species is the house ant. It reaches a similar size as the common ant but has a darker brown color. While these small creatures spend most of the year outdoors and build nests in garden walls or house foundations, in spring they often move indoors. They leave long trails on facades and enter homes through gaps around windows and balcony doors.
Pharaoh ant
The biggest problem for Czech households is definitely the Pharaoh ant. This heat-loving pest has a yellow to light brown color, grows to about 2 millimeters in length, and prefers heated indoor environments. There, it feeds on food residues and spreads various dangerous diseases.

Where and how do ants live?
Although ants can appear almost anywhere, they prefer warm and humid environments. While some species inhabit forests, meadows, parks, and gardens, others prefer human dwellings and similar structures. They usually enter these places through cracks and gaps, or through poorly sealed windows and doors.

- Spaces under carpets
- Cracks and gaps in walls

Ants typically choose kitchens or pantries as their shelter, where they have easy access to food supplies. As omnivores capable of consuming almost anything, it does not matter whether you store only old potatoes or chocolate gifts. They readily consume chocolate, cookies, and sugary liquids, but they also have no problem eating raw or cooked meat and even pet food.
Ants usually seek warm environments and also require higher humidity. They tolerate dryness and cold poorly.
How do ants harm people?
People who have never had a problem with an ant infestation often consider it amusing. However, once these small creatures appear in a household, they quickly change their opinion. Although ants have a reputation as hardworking insects, seem harmless at first glance, and can be beneficial in nature, no one wants them at home.
